TROOP 153 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

 January 8, 2006

 Attendees:

Steve Goemer, Martin Lunde, Jon Souer, Mike Petersen, Joe Loyas and Don Burr.

Jon Souer called the meeting to order @ 7:05 PM. Copies of the sign-in sheet are attached for the record. Minutes of Committee Meetings will be posted online for all to read. Corrections should be submitted to Martin Lunde, after which corrected minutes will be reposted. The minutes from the Committee Meeting of December 6, 2005 were approved as posted.

Scoutmaster’s Report by Jon Souer

Few adults have signed on as coaches for each Leadership position in the Troop. Jon had printed job descriptions and evaluations sheets for each position, and Scouts would be "graded" at each position. This would allow the adults to "assist" and teach the Scouts good leadership skills. Jon will discuss this at the PLC meeting and see what the Scouts think. Al least, there should be a coach for each Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Librarian, Quartermaster and Scribe. Mike Petersen volunteered to coach the Scribe.

Joe Mans is Ok to complete his Eagle Rank – only has his Board of Review remaining.

Gray Wolf (formerly Pine Tree) has an opening for a Troop 153 candidate for Jr.Leader Training this summer. This item was tabled until next Committee Meeting.

Treasurer’s Report by Tom Nelson

Tom was not present as he was attending a funeral. Report will be given at next meeting.

Quartermaster’s Report by Steve Goemer

Not much to report. Some of the oldest and most battered equipment needs to be discarded. Steve plus the Quartermasters from each Patrol and the Troop Quartermaster will sort through the items and decide what needs to be discarded. The PLC will set a date to erect all of the tents during a regular Troop meeting to determine condition.

All of the cook boxes need a good cast iron pan to replace the degrading Teflon® coated aluminum pans. Steve will check on the cost of CI pans and new cook stoves. Don Burr indicated that as part of the Faith Methodist Outreach Program, $100 each is available to the Scout Troop and the Cub Pack every year. This money is to be spent on items that last (perhaps the new cast iron frying pans).

Don also noted that a key lock must be added to the gate of the Scout trailer storage area.

The cost of the shelving materials for the Scout/Cub storage area has been donated by Faith Methodist. Thank you Faith Methodist!!

Advancement Report – Mike Petersen

There is no record of Matt Johnson receiving his Life rank – so Mike will look at Matt’s Scout book to see who signed off on his Board of Review. This will be corrected before the next Committee meeting.

Dan Amundsen has been coming to the meetings, but no one is sure of his goals. Mike will check into this to see what he wants to do.

Mike has Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat cards for anyone who has taken the course on-line.

Youth Protection – Patty Mans (not present)

No update as Patty was not present.

Recycling Report by Scott Roadfeldt

Scott was not present; however, he is still working to see if the old trailer could be stored at Computype on a permanent basis. The trailer is presently stored there on a temporary basis.

Don Burr will get permission to add can storage to the area behind the present dumpster adjacent to the trailer.

Other Items by various Committee Members

Because of the increasing cost of gasoline, the cost of fuel for a Scout activity should be based upon 12 MPG and the total trip miles from MapQuest. Any excess fuel funds will be put into the individual accounts of the Scouts who attended the event.

Jon Souer is still pursuing the Webelos; a joint bowling event will occur on January 16th.

A topic for next year is the "split" of funds between the Scout and the Troop resulting form the various Troop sales programs during the year. Presently there is an 80/20 split. At a recent Round Table meeting, Jon learned of the following program utilized in another Troop. After a Scout earns enough money to pay his cost of being a Scout for one year, all of his sales earnings go 100% to the Scout. Perhaps Troop 153 should try this??

The Pinewood Derby is scheduled to take place on March 12, 2006. Do the Scouts want to construct trucks for this year’s race? Also, do Patty Mans and Joe Loyas want to do the food service again this year? Last year the food service earned the Troop approximately $200.

Don Burr motioned and Steve Goemer seconded a proposal for the Troop to purchase a hard drive to be used to store digital pictures of Troop and Patrol events. A discussion of cost and availability of funds to do such followed the motioned. The motioned passed without any no votes.

Upcoming Events:

  • The Blue and Gold Webelo dinner is scheduled for sometime in February; Don Burr will check on the specific date.
  • A Troop winter camping trip to a yurt near Duluth has been tentatively scheduled for February 11 & 12, 2006.
  • A Scout-Trainer Development Conference will be held at Dunwoody on March 4, 2006, from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. Cost is $12 per person and registration must be completed by February 22, 2006.
  • University of Scouting adult training will occur on April 1, 2006 at St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights.
  • On May 20, 2006 two events will be held simultaneously – A District Camporee with the theme of "Outdoor Cooking" and a Boy/Girl Scout Day at Valley Fair. What does the Troop want to do??
  • June 23 thru July 5 – 2006 American Heritage Trails Trip – see attached flyer regarding this.
  • The High Adventure activity has not yet been finalized for Summer 2006.

With no further business, the meeting was closed at 8:45 PM. The next Committee meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Sunday February 5th at Faith Methodist Church, St. Anthony, MN.
