April 9, 2006

Attendees: Martin Lunde, Jon Souer, Bruce Johnson, Tom Nelson, Mike Petersen, Donald

Burr, Dan Zemmel and Joe Loyas.

Jon Souer called the meeting to order @ 7:00 PM. Copies of the Unit Charter Renewal Report Package and the sign-in sheet are attached for the record. Minutes of Committee Meeting will be posted online for all to read. Corrections should be submitted to Martin Lunde, after which corrected minutes will be reposted. The minutes from the Committee Meeting of March 9, 2005 were approved as read.

Dan Zemmel was asked to attend the Committee Meeting and discuss why Pack 153 chose to join Troop 106 rather than Troop 153. Dan suggested the following:

  1. The behavior of some of the Troop 153 Scouts was not positive during a couple of events in which Pack 153 was involved: a bicycle incident at St. Anthony High School and another incident at a car wash fund raising event in downtown Minneapolis (it was later discovered that the downtown incident involved Cub Scouts and not Boy Scouts).
  2. Limited interaction between the Scouts and the Webelos – more would be very desirable at Pack meetings.
  3. Cooperative special events, perhaps say two events per year such as a campout, hike, etc.
  4. Overall, simple more quality involvement.
  5. The Webelos wanted to move up as a group because of friendships.

Scoutmaster’s Report by Jon Souer

Jon said that all 4th and 5th grade Webelos are always welcome at the Troop meetings and that the Troop should reinforce its commitment to the Den Chief program. Jon recommended one joint event per quarter in lieu of just 2 per year. To this end, Jon suggested that the Scouts and Webelos do this years food drive as a joint event at the end of April. Suggestions from the last Committee meeting remain:

  1. A "press release" to the Saint Anthony Bulletin listing Troop 153 past activities and upcoming activities.
  2. A slide show at the Pack meeting that illustrates Troop 153 activities.
  3. An adult to spearhead the above and one or two adults to do recruitment full time.

The Phone Tree will be reactivated within the Troop in order to improve communication. Attendance at the PLC meetings remains "hit and miss" – this has to improve if the PLC is to be really effective. There is a "Campership" (essentially a scholarship) sponsored by North Star Council available for attendance at Philmont this year. This months Round Table Meeting is to be held at Faith Methodist Church on May 4 at 7:30 PM. Volunteers are badly needed at Council to assist in all aspects of Scouting. Friends of Scouting is $400 short of its goal for Troop 153 this year.

Finally, Jon indicated that Tim Morris wrote an E-mail to council regarding a specific adult within Troop 153. Jon felt that if difficulties exist between adults within the Troop, discussions should be between the adults, and/or the Committee. There is no reason to go to the Council without first discussing the issues within the Troop.
