TROOP 153 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

July 9, 2006

Attendees: Martin Lunde, Jon Souer, Scott Roadfeldt, Mike Petersen, Vince Mans, Tom Nelson, Steve Goemer and Joe Loyas.

Jon Souer called the meeting to order @ 5:30 PM. An agenda was not distributed. Minutes of Committee Meeting will be posted online for all to read. This meeting was held shortly after David Lunde’s Eagle Court of Honor.

Scoutmaster’s Report by Jon Souer

Preparation for both Summer Camps (South Dakota and Canada) is going well and is essentially complete. In order to qualify for a Super Troop Award, a service project should be completed and the morning/evening flag ceremony should be held every day at camp.

Weekly meetings are becoming "thin" with Scouts because of competing activities. So we need to adapt to and work around such as well as do a better job of recruitment, especially with the cub Scouts. Jon suggested that we "dual register" the older Scouts as Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts (15 thru 21 year old boys). Then join forces with another group, such as a church group, the Girl Scouts, etc. This should reduce the barriers and increase the desire for the older Scouts to stay active.

Tom suggested another "Passport" as a method to promote activity throughout the year in order to qualify for next years Canada trip. The Passport would require a certain number of points to be earned in order do the Canadian trip. For instance:

  • Earning a Merit badge = 1 point
  • Completing SSD and SA = 1 point
  • Five (5) campouts = 1 point per campout
  • One rank advancement = 2 points
  • Regular meeting attendance = ???? points
  • Etc.

Tom Nelson will do a proposal for a Passport based upon a point system for the next Committee meeting.

To date Don Burr has not forwarded the pictures of last years fishing trip to Jon for adding to the Scout "picture history."

Treasurer’s Report by Tom Nelson

Tom offered the following:

  • Checking balance = $1,912
  • Savings balance = $2,012
  • Total balance = $3,924
  • Of the total balance $1,200 is encumbered to individual Scouts

Approximately $600 is owed for the upcoming South Dakota trip and is expected in shortly.

Quartermaster’s Report by Steve Goemer

Not much new to report. Some equipment is still outstanding since the last camping trip at Silverwood.

Jon will generate a "Policy Paper" regarding the use of personal tents on Troop camping trips. This "Policy Paper" will include:

  1. The use of a personal tent must be approved prior to each camping trip.
  2. If the use of a personal tent is approved, then:
    • There must be 2 Scouts per tent.
    • The Troop is NOT responsible for any and all damage to the personal tent.
    • A Scout cannot be in a tent by himself.
    • All Scout rules continue to apply within personal tents.
    • The camp site must be large enough to accommodate the use of personal tents.

Advancement Report by Mike Petersen

David Lunde’s Eagle Court of Honor was held at Central Park Pavilion on July 9 and he has received his Eagle Badge.

Tom and Tim will do 3 to 5 Merit Badges with the Scouts during the South Dakota Summer Camp.

Youth Protection by Joe Loyas

Tom has all of the Scout physical forms for the South Dakota trip. Mike is pulling his forms together.

  • Class 1 and 2 medical forms are required for the Scouts.
  • Class 1 and 3 medical forms are required if camping overnight for more than 72 hours.

Recycling Report by Scott Roadfeldt

Recycled aluminum is presently bringing$.80/lb.

Strength Report

The Troop will invite the Cub Scouts to participate in Village Fest this year camping in Central Park as it was a big hit last year. Activities would include building a lashed tower and water balloon hurls. Village Fest is August 4 and 5, so the Troop and Cubs would camp on Friday night. The Troop will:

  • Camp overnight on Friday
  • Do the same water balloon activity as last year

Jon suggested that a parade float could be fashioned from his pontoon boat trailer so that the Troop and Cubs could be in the Village Fest parade if the Scouts and Cubs want to do this. Mike is going to the Webelos meeting on Monday evening in order to see what the Cubs would like to do and make some final arrangements.

Upcoming Events

  • July 16 – 22 Black Hills trip.
  • June 23 thru July 5 – 2006 American Heritage Trails Trip.
  • Village Fest – August 4 and 5
  • Canadian fishing/hiking/camping trip - August

With no further business, the meeting was closed at 7:30 PM. The next Committee meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Sunday August 8th at Faith Methodist Church, St. Anthony, MN.
