TROOP 153 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

September 11, 2005

Attendees: Bruce Johnson, Martin Lunde, Tom Nelson, Jon Souer, Joe Loyas, Jay Jones, Steve Goemer, Kris Goemer, Mike Petersen, Eric Petersen, Vince Manns, Donald Burr, Roy Nelson and Bill Erbes.

Bruce Johnson called the meeting to order @ 7:00 PM. Copies of the printed agenda distributed by Bruce and the sign-in sheet are attached for the record. Hereafter minutes of the Committee Meetings will be posted online for all to read. Corrections should be submitted to Martin Lunde, after which corrected minutes will be reposted.

Kris Goemer and Eric Petersen were in attendance in order to present and discuss their proposed Eagle Projects. Both presentations were accommodated at the beginning of the meeting so that they could return home to co schoolwork.

Kris Goemers Eagle Project consists of removing Buckthorn from the new Silverwood Park (old Salvation Army Park). This weed has become very invasive and needs to be removed. Kris spoke with the park manager who will assist by either removing or killing the roots. This project is Ok to do thru October and requires 2 groups of 5 Scouts each: one morning group working form 9 to 12, and an afternoon group working from 1 to 4. The Scout volunteers for this project will accumulate Service Hours.

Eric Petersens Eagle Project consists of developing and trail marking "Running/Waling Routes through Central Park in Saint Anthony. Permanent in-ground flat markers would mark the Routes. The project would start in the Fall and finish in the Spring, and has been approved by Public Works. Additional approval; is required by St. Anthony Park Board. Eric will be developing an equipment list and determining how much money needs to be raised for this project.

Following the two Eagle Project presentations, Martin Lunde reviewed the minutes from the last Committee Meeting on May 8, 2005. The minutes were approved as read.

Scoutmaster’s Report by Jon Souer

Jon suggested that there would be 3 Advancement/Merit Badges Troop meetings per month, with a fourth meeting to be an Activity Meeting. In addition, the Patrols are to do an outside activity on their own each month.

The Patrols will be reduced from 4 to 3. The Patrols will be composed of mixed age Scouts and friends will be kept together as much as possible.

The Popcorn fundraiser will occur from October 1 through October 26. Sara McPhee is the point person for this activity. Last year the prizes were not distributed; this will be discussed with Sara.

Several other upcoming events of note:

  • September 23, 24 and 25 – Fall Camporee @ Rum River; simulated airplane crash where Cub Scouts are the victims, etc. Very good activity for all involved.
  • October 1 - Basic Leader Training for Adults.
  • October 15 and 16 – Mississippi River Run Camping Trip @ Frontenanc – 2 boats required for the Scouts to earn Boating Merit Badge.
  • October 29 – University of Scouting for Adult Training.
  • June 23 thru July 5 – 2006 American Heritage Trails Trip – see attached flyer regarding this.

Treasurer’s Report by Tom Nelson

As of todays date:

  • There is a total of $3,300 in savings and checking accounts;
  • Of which approximately $850 is encumbered
  • Funds are about where they should be as nonprofit.

Tom noted that about ½ of the new trailer cost was from funds raised specifically for the new trailer. Tom also indicated that he would phone the Scouts that have dropped out or transferred while still owing monies to the Troop.

Quartermaster’s Report by Steve Goemer

No particular equipment issues at the moment; however, the Troop does need new cast iron frying pans. Steve will check and clean all stoves and check all lantern globes.

A long discussion ensued regarding the need for Patrol boxes. It was noted that the plastic totes worked well on the past few trips 9(specially in light of the shelving in the new trailer). As a result, it was decided not to develop Patrol boxes at this time.

Tom Nelson requested approval to use the Troop trailer and Troop equipment for a St. Anthony Middle School 8th grade camp out at Wild River State Park. Jon Souer made a motion to support the school program. Don Burr seconded it. During the discussion, it was suggested that the Troop tents not be used and that proper supervision would be required. A vote was taken – all approved, no opposed.

Several trailer issues were discussed.

  1. Trailer security was discussed. It may be prudent to provide additional security for the trailer. Options include, but are not limited to: install a gate in front of the trailer; add a wheel lock; and/or add a chain from the trailer wheel/axle to a fence post. Don and Tom volunteered to discuss these and make recommendations.
  2. No progress has been made with regard to trailer graphics. Design suggestions/options should be brought to the next Committee Meeting for discussion.
  3. Don Burr made a motion to sell the old trailer. The motioned was seconded and it passed unanimously with no opposition.

Indoor storage area issues were also discussed.

  1. The renovation to Faith Methodist Church is essentially complete. Thus the Troop can resume meeting at the church after September 19, 2005.
  2. Shelving can be built within the specified storage area after September 19. The specified area is a 6’ x 8’ extending from the floor to the ceiling. Adult volunteers will be constructing the shelves on a date yet to be determined.
  3. Shelving cannot be bolted to the sheetrock walls as light gage sheet metal "Z" sections were used to support the sheetrock. As a Structural Engineer this author is concerned about the stability of stand alone, loaded, tall shelving if lateral support is not provided.
  4. The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will be sharing this space.
  5. An Outreach Room has been provided by the church for use by the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. Jon Souer located a free desk for use in this room.

Advancement Report – Mike Petersen

There will be 6 rank advancements and 44 Merit Badges presented at the upcoming Court of Honor on September 18. David Lundes Eagle Court of Honor will most probably be held on October 15 or 16 if an outdoor venue can be secured.

Fund Raising:

The following people are the Chairpersons for the specified fund event:

  • Popcorn – Sara McPhee
  • Christmas Wreaths – Dan Zimmels
  • Craft Fair – Bruce Johnson

Upcoming Events:

Also Tom Nelson sent in a reservation for Eagle Cave scheduled for January 6 and 7, in Madison Wisconsin. The cost is $45 to $50 and the Scouts sleep overnight in safe caves.
