TROOP 153 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

November 6, 2005

Attendees: Bruce Johnson, Martin Lunde, Jon Souer, Mike Petersen and Vince Manns

Bruce Johnson called the meeting to order @ 7:10 PM. Copies of the printed agenda distributed by Bruce and the sign-in sheet are attached for the record. Minutes of Committee Meetings will be posted online for all to read. Corrections should be submitted to Martin Lunde, after which corrected minutes will be reposted. The minutes from the Committee Meeting of October 11, 2005 were approved as posted.

Scoutmaster’s Report by Jon Souer

Jon printed job descriptions for every Scout position in the Troop; this should be very helpful to each Scout in the newly reformed Patrols (refer to last months minutes).

Merit Badge nights seem to be going "OK." Jon developed a link to forms regarding such at: www.jonsouer.com/troop153/forms.

Jon distributed new Viking Council patches that were used for a short time just before Viking Council became part of the Northern Star Council (MN and WI).

Treasurer’s Report by Jon Souer (for Tom Nelson)

In order to collect the monies due Tom wrote notes to all former Scouts and adults who owe money to the Troop. No responses to date.

An accounting of the Craft Fair event was submitted and is attached: wages totaled $435.00 and tips added an additional $218.00 for a total of $653.00. Everything went well; however, there was enough work on Sunday that additional Scouts would have been helpful.

Jon did not have a detailed accounting for the Troop for October; Tom will provide such at the next Committee Meeting.

Quartermaster’s Report (Steve Goemer not present)

The shelving is finished and the Pine Wood Derby track is on the floor below the shelving. An audit of all Troop equipment will be done as the equipment is moved back onto the shelves. All badly damaged equipment will be discarded during this process. Date to be determined.

A discussion regarding a key lock vs. combination lock for the Scout area in the church yielded a decision to use a key lock. A key lock allows limited access and better control.

Questions arose regarding the sale of the old trailer:

  • If sold where do we store the aluminum cans between trips to the recycle facility?
  • Is the old trailer still covered by insurance?
  • If not sold where could it be stored – Computype???

The people who can answer some of the questions were not present so this topic as shelved until the next meeting.

Advancement Report – Mike Petersen

Everyone must remember that the BOR must submit the proper paperwork so that a Scouts time history is correct. Mike and others had to recreate Robie Myron’s tenderfoot BOR, as his paperwork was lost. Matt Johnson’s paperwork might also be missing – Mike and Bruce to check on this.

Joe Manns has all of his Merit Badges complete for Eagle. Jon Souer reviewed Joe’s Eagle packet with Joe – a couple of items remain uncompleted.

Youth Protection – Patty Manns (not present)

The question was raised as to whether youth protection training is good forever, or if it has to be renewed every year or two. No one had an answer; thus this will be check at Council.

Upcoming Events:

  • David Lundes Eagle Court of Honor date has changed because an outdoor venue was not able to be secured.
  • November 17, 18 and 19 there will be a camping trip to Gromholm Park.
  • Eagle Cave camping January 6 and 7, in Madison Wisconsin. The cost is $45 to $50 and the Scouts sleep overnight in safe caves. Sign up required by November 7.
  • June 23 thru July 5 – 2006 American Heritage Trails Trip – see attached flyer regarding this.
  • A winter camping trip to Alpha Loupa will be scheduled if enough Scouts are interested.

What will be Summer 2006 activity for the older Scouts? Suggestions include: whitewater rafting in CO; Lake Superior sailing; etc. Should decide at the Dec Committee meeting if possible. Jon will poll the Scouts at the next Troop meeting.

Sign up for Philmont for summer 2007 is underway now. Contact Tim Morris regarding details.

Other Items:

Webelos transition to Troop 153 – Bruce Johnson submitted a "memo" regarding a phone call that he received from Maret Moreland of Pack 153 (copy attached for the record). Essentially there is concern that this transition first occurs with Troop 153 and secondly occurs in an informed timely manner. There are a number of Webelos that want to move up as a group and there are a number of dedicated very involved Webelo parents who would be good Troop 153 parents. So this is an opportunity not to be missed.

It was suggested by Maret that Scouts and Scout leaders attend one of two upcoming Webelo events on Dec 16 (make Xmas gifts) and Jan 28 (bowling). The Committee committed to having Scouts attend both events. Sign up sheets for both will be posted shortly before each event at the Troop meetings.

Jon also suggested that our committee meet with the Webelo Committee in the near future (probably January 2006). In addition, Jon will meet with the Webelo leader before the Blue/Gold dinner in February.

With no further business, the meeting was closed at 8:15 PM. The next Committee meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Sunday December 6th at Faith Methodist Church, St. Anthony, MN.
